Sustainable Fashion on a $50/Month Clothing Budge

Sustainable Fashion on a $50/Month Clothing Budge

I know what you're thinking. Sustainable fashion is expensive. That's for people who shop at Reformation and don't look at price tags.

I thought the same thing. Then I actually tried. For six months, I gave myself $50 a month for clothes. Not a penny more. And I only bought secondhand or from brands that actually try to be decent.

Here's my real spreadsheet. Every dollar. Every mistake.

The rules I made for myself

No new fast fashion. That meant no Shein, no Zara, no H&M new stuff. I could buy them secondhand though.

Thrift stores, Poshmark, eBay, Depop all count. Sales at sustainable brands count too, but those rarely fit the budget.

I kept a note on my phone. Every time I bought something, I wrote it down right away. If I didn't have the cash that month, I waited.

Month 1 – January ($48 spent)

Thrift store wool sweater – $6

It's itchy. I wore it anyway with a long sleeve underneath.

Thrift store jeans (Levi's) – $12

These fit perfect. Still have them. Best $12 I spent all year.

Poshmark Everlane t-shirt – $9

Used. Slightly faded. That's fine by me.

eBay Patagonia fleece – $21

This was my big spend. The zipper sticks a little. I didn't care. A new one costs $150.

Total: $48

Leftover: $2. I rolled it to next month.

Month 2 – February ($52 spent)

Thrift store cotton button-up – $5

White. A little yellow under the arms. Soaked it in baking soda. Good enough.

Depop Uniqlo leggings pants – $15

Someone wore these twice. Looked brand new. Retail is $40.

Poshmark Merino wool base layer – $20

Smartwool brand. Had a small hole near the thumb. I fixed it with my sewing kit. Saved maybe $60 off new price.

Thrift store belt – $3

Old leather. Falling apart a little. Still holds my pants up.

Total: $52 ($2 over from last month, so $50 out of pocket)

Month 3 – March ($44 spent)

Thrift store denim jacket – $10

Levi's again. A little tight in the shoulders. Still works unbuttoned.

Depop wool vest – $18

This was dumb. I don't wear vests. But it was cheap and warm. It sits in my closet.

eBay running shorts – $9

Nike. Used. Smelled weird at first. Vinegar soak fixed it.

Thrift store tote bag – $2

Canvas. Holds groceries. Fine.

Thrift store t-shirt (3 for $5) – $5

Old Navy. Men's section. Comfy.

Total: $44

Leftover: $6.

Can you do this too?

Yes. But you need patience. Some months I found nothing good. Other months I found everything.

The spreadsheet helped. Seeing the numbers made me think twice before buying dumb stuff.

I'm not perfect. I still want new things sometimes. But $50 a month works for me. Maybe it works for you too.

Start with one month. See what happens.
